Kansas City is a great place for indoor water parks. It has a large population, lots of tourist attractions, and – the final ingredient that makes it a logical place for an indoor water park – frequently bad weather. Whether it’s the cold of winter, the humidity of summer, or the rain that can happen at any time of year, indoor water parks offer shelter when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate with your plans.
There are currently two indoor water parks in Kansas City – one on the Missouri side and one in Kansas. Each is part of a large national chain with locations throughout the United States. Here’s how these two big names in the business stack up.
CoCo Key Water Resort
At 55,000 square feet, this is the largest indoor water park in the state of Missouri. The chain features a Florida Keys vibe, with a parrot mascot and bright colors to go with its tropical indoor temperature. The attractions are mostly for kids, with a children’s playground, multiple water slides, water agility course, etc. For grownups, there’s also a hot tub area and lazy river where you can relax while the kids wear themselves out. CoCo Key Kansas City is connected to a Holiday Inn, so you can stay for a night or weekend and enjoy the water park repeatedly. Day passes are also available for those who don’t want to stay over.
Great Wolf Lodge
This indoor water park is 38,000 square feet, and has a number of the attractions that make the Great Wolf Lodge chain so popular. There’s a funnel slide, multiple body and tube slides that wind in and out of the building, a lazy river, and many other rides and slides. Compared to CoCo Key, this is much more of a complete vacation experience, as the resort has all sorts of other activities beyond the indoor water park (many of them geared toward children). Admission to the water park is also reserved for hotel guests only – day passes are not sold separately to the public.
In the future, Schlitterbahn Kansas City Waterpark will offer one more indoor water park option. Right now, this is an outdoor-only water park in Kansas City, Kansas. However, there are plans to add an indoor portion with a retractable roof. When that happens, the metro area will have three of the biggest names in the business (Schilitterbahn is well-known in Texas). See, we told you Kansas City was a great place for an indoor water park to set up shop.
