7000 Kalahari Drive
Sandusky, OH 44870
Every water park claims to be biggest or best at something, but the Kalahari Waterpark Resort in Sandusky, Ohio has a better case than most. For one thing, the indoor water park is massive – in fact, it’s the largest in the country. For another, the African theme sets it apart from most other resorts of its type, which are often – let’s face it – pretty vanilla in their decor. But there’s one other feature of this resort that makes it stand out – it’s located in Sandusky, a legendary tourist area that has been entertaining visitors for over a century.
Sure, there are plenty of other resorts with indoor water parks. There’s even another Kalahari resort in Wisconsin Dells. But the resort in Sandusky is unique among water parks in its scope and style. It’s reason enough to make a trip to the area.
How many other hotels do you know of that feature authentic African decor? A lot of resorts have their own themes, but at the Kalahari, it’s about more than just names and logos. You will find African-inspired decorations and furniture in the restaurants, the public areas, and in your room. This king-sized resort has about 900 rooms for rent. These include everything from small guest rooms to ten-bedroom suites with full kitchens.
Slides and Rides
The indoor water park at the Kalahari is a mind-blowing 173,000 square feet. Its wave pool alone is 12,000 square feet – larger than the total size of a lot of other indoor water parks. Given its size and the transparent roof that lets the sun shine through, you may actually forget you’re inside while cavorting in this water park. As for the rides, there are so many of them that we can’t even list them all here. However, here are some of the biggies:
- Two Surfing Simulators
- “Rollercoaster” Water Slide
- Raft Rides
- Lazy River
- Numerous Body Slides
- Swim Up Bar
- Outdoor Water Park (Memorial Through Labor Day)
Located on the shores of Lake Erie, Sandusky is one of the oldest resort towns in the United States. The main attraction is the Cedar Point Peninsula, famous for boating, rollercoasters and – you got it – water parks. Needless to say, there’s plenty to do in the area, and resorts like the Kalahari make an offseason vacation just about as fun as a summer trip. Here’s a sampling of the places you might want to visit in Sandusky:
- Other Water Parks, such as Soak City
- Events on Local Islands (May Through August)
- Local Wineries
